Writing Courses

Lux Education offers intensive writing courses throughout the school year for middle and high schoolers.

Every class will include 1-3 pages of new vocabulary, several reading comprehension exercises, and a writing assignment.  In addition, each class will be focused on a specific element or use of writing, as follows:

Week 1:  diagnostic writing exercise,; the mechanics of verbs; correct symbols for revision

Week 2:  punctuation and sentence structure, including simple vs. complex, parallelism, variety, complete vs. incomplete

Week 3:  pronouns, conjunctions, and prepositions--how to combine sentences smoothly and transition from one sentence to another

Week 4:  using concrete language and active voice

Week 5:  the structure of a paragraph; choosing brevity or expansion

Week 6:  using written sources:  quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing

Week 7:  the structure of an essay:  introducing and defining a main idea, providing support, and concluding

Week 8:  using figurative language and giving descriptions

Week 9:  how to revise your work, writing in science

Week 10:  writing a personal essay

Week 11: describing events; writing in history

Week 12: criticism:  music, art, and literature
